Miss you! I have a friend who is living in Houston. One of these days he visited New Orleans and guess what? He LOVED it! Said he felt at home, that NO is the most "carioca" (adjective that means from Rio de Janeiro) of the world cities (after Rio, of course).
Cafe Brasil was a music club on Frenchmen Street that thrived before the storm in 2005. As you can guess, the music spotlighted there was mainly South American. It was a vibrant place to be.
Sadly, it never re-opened after Katrina, but it still stands as a reminder to those of us who were here then of a glorious time of music and dancing.
I'm not surprised your friend loved New Orleans. What does surprise me is that he still stays in Houston. I would say he is right about the city being carioca.
Thank you, Glenn :-) Thiago stays in Houston because he has to. If he had a choice, I am sure he would go to NO right now. He is only 22 and it's his first time abroad. Such a shame you don't understand Portuguese - Thiago published a post (via another Brazilian's blogger) about his impressions of NO. I was moved by his words, his is so young, yet so old!

Sussah, I have to tell you that it's not only funny, it's "Portuguese from Portugal" funny (which couldn't be funnier, at least for a Brazilian Portuguese speaker like me).
@sussah Oooohh, I just used the link to paste my url and see how I looked as a swarthy Portuguese, and was overwhelmed at the beauty of my writing in language. Of course, when I had Google translate it from Portuguese back to English, I was nonplussed. It was like reading something Manuel might have written during his off hours at Fawlty Towers.
(Before you go and try it, let me mention I am making a joke at Google's expense. Can I be "disappeared" for that?)
That's not all, folks! Out of all that color and graffiti it took me only a half second to zero in on the "I seen you" written on one of the doorways. I thought only rural Nova Scotians talked like that!
@Rick Nova Scotians have no monopoly on language, Rick. That's Yat, New Orleans' own patois, past tense. (See the pervasiveness of the Cajun heritage in South Louisiana? The rest of the state, from Baton Rouge on up, despises us for it, and we love it that they hate us.)
Glenn, I have been laughing as crazy with Fawlty Towers in youtube. Thank you for mentioning it. I had never heard of this show, and Manuel is priceless!
By the way, no offense, but "Estou a espalhar a.." do remind me of a saying very common in Brasil "X(a person) resolveu espalhar a merda no ventilador."
